It translates literally as &#8220;Crunch Sir&#8221; and is essentially a single slice of ham along with a slice of Gr\u00fcyere or Emmentaler cheese.&nbsp; Adding an egg on top makes it a Croque Madame.&nbsp; Sometimes chicken is substituted for the ham in a Croque Madame.<\/p>\n<h2>Croque Monsieur<\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li>Butter two slices of French bread both on one side with softened butter<\/li>\n<li>On what will become the inside, spread a layer of Dijon mustard.<\/li>\n<li>Prepare a thin slice of quality ham and a slice of cheese between the slices.<\/li>\n<li>Put the assembled sandwich on a preheated very hot griddle or cast iron skillet.<\/li>\n<li>Cook both sides.<\/li>\n<li>For a proper finish, preheat the broiler<\/li>\n<li>Spread <a href=\"https:\/\/www.grandpacooks.com\/recipes\/the-five-mother-sauces\/\">b\u00e9chamel sauce<\/a> thickly on the top.<\/li>\n<li>Garnish with thyme and any other desired spices<\/li>\n<li>Broil until browned and bubbly<\/li>\n<li>Let set a few minutes before trimming the edges for a neat presentation<\/li>\n<li>Cut into finger-food sized pieces for serving<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2>Croque Madame<\/h2>\n<p>Prepare a very lightly fried egg, and place on top of the sandwich after Step 10.&nbsp; In this case, you will NOT cut them into finger-food sized pieces.&nbsp; You can also use shredded chicken at Step 3.<\/p>\n<h2>Bobby Flay Recipe<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>CROQUE MADAME<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>4 eggs + 2 yolks<\/li>\n<li>4 C milk (1 qt)<\/li>\n<li>1 C cream<\/li>\n<li>2 tsp Dijon Mustard<\/li>\n<li>3\/4 C gruyere<\/li>\n<li>S+P<\/li>\n<li>Nutmeg<\/li>\n<li>Cayenne<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol>\n<li>Soak cubes of bread in custard for at least 2 hours<\/li>\n<li>Bake 350\u00ba for 50-60 minutes<\/li>\n<li>Sprinkle with more cheese, then put under broiler for a few minutes<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Tomato Side<\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li>Cherry tomatoes in hot skillet<\/li>\n<li>Drizzle with EVOO<\/li>\n<li>Make bread crumbs with rustic day old loaf<br \/>\nPulse in basil and oregano<\/li>\n<li>Toast in EVOO until starts to brown<\/li>\n<li>Toss tomatoes<\/li>\n<li>Add basil leaves<\/li>\n<li>Sprinkle with toasted bread crumbs<\/li>\n<li>Plate next to egg (below) and sprinkle with Balsamic vinegar<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Splash canola in skillet<\/li>\n<li>Add thinly sliced ham<\/li>\n<li>Salt and pepper<\/li>\n<li>EVOO<\/li>\n<li>One egg on top of the ham<\/li>\n<li>Cover pan to cook 60 seconds covered<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Serve ham egg, croque madame and tomatoes on a large plate<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A Croque Monsieur (as it turns out) is just a fancy name for a ham sandwich.&nbsp;
