casings removed<\/li>\n<li>4 slices bacon, cut into 1\/2 inch pieces<\/li>\n<li>2 tablespoons sugar<\/li>\n<li>3\/4 cup chopped onion (diced)<\/li>\n<li>1 tablespoon tomato paste<\/li>\n<li>2 tablespoons Jim Beam whiskey<\/li>\n<li>1\/4 cup apple cider vinegar<\/li>\n<li>1\/4 C TBL BBQ sauce<\/li>\n<li>2 tablespoons molasses<\/li>\n<li>1\/4 C Heinz or Sir Kensington&#8217;s ketchup<\/li>\n<li>2 TBL Dijon mustard<\/li>\n<li>1 tablespoon dry mustard<\/li>\n<li>1 tsp Liquid Smoke<\/li>\n<li>1 (16 ounce) can small white beans, drained (See note)<\/li>\n<li>1 can Pinto beans<\/li>\n<li>1 can B&amp;M Baked Beans or Bush&#8217;s Baked Beans<\/li>\n<li>1 can crushed tomatoes<\/li>\n<li>1 tsp <a href=\"https:\/\/www.grandpacooks.com\/recipes\/roberts-thunder-powder\/\">Grandpa&#8217;s Thunder Powder<\/a><\/li>\n<li>1 teaspoon salt<\/li>\n<li>1\/2 teaspoon black pepper<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>STEP BY STEP<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>In a heavy, medium size saucepan, cook the bratwurst over medium heat until it begins to brown, about 5-6 minutes.<\/li>\n<li>Add the sugar and stir for about 2 minutes.<\/li>\n<li>Add the chopped onion, stir well and continue to cook, stirring occasionally until the onion is tender, 5 minutes more.<\/li>\n<li>Add the tomato paste until it starts to break down, about 2 minutes.<\/li>\n<li>Deglaze the pan with the vinegar and whisky, then add the molasses, BBQ sauce, Dijon mustard, and ketchup.<\/li>\n<li>Add 1\/4 C water at this point if it seems too thick.<\/li>\n<li>Add the beans and tomatoes, and season with the dry mustard, salt, pepper and Thunder Powder.<\/li>\n<li>Stir to mix and reduce heat to low and cook 15 minutes.<\/li>\n<li>Put into 9&#215;13 glass baking pan and &#8220;shingle&#8221; the bacon over top of the beans.<\/li>\n<li>Sprinkle lightly with brown sugar and bake at 350\u00ba for 90 minutes.<\/li>\n<li>Cool 10-15 minutes before serving.<\/li>\n<li>Total time about 2 hours.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>SHORTCUT RECIPE<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Brown your bratwurst and your bacon together.\u00a0 About 5 minutes<\/li>\n<li>Add sugar, onion and tomato paste all at one time.\u00a0 Cook 5 minutes.<\/li>\n<li>Add to the pan, all at once, vinegar, whisky, molasses, BBQ sauce, Dijon mustard, and ketchup to deglaze.<\/li>\n<li>Add 1\/4 C water at this point if it seems too thick.<\/li>\n<li>Add 48 ounces of B&amp;M Baked Beans or Bush&#8217;s Baked Beans.<\/li>\n<li>Add tomatoes, and season with the dry mustard, salt, pepper and Thunder Powder.<\/li>\n<li>Stir to mix and cook 10 for minutes, and you are ready to serve.<\/li>\n<li>Total time about 30 minutes.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>NOTE<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>There are recipes around about cooking your beans from scratch, but there are so many things that can go wrong, we&#8217;ve found that the canned beans give a consistent result.\u00a0 Just make sure to get a quality can of canned beans.\u00a0 This is your main ingredient.\u00a0 Don&#8217;t cut corners.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>INGREDIENTS 2 bratwurst &#8211;
